Childhood memories: Study reveals Britain’s favourite nostalgic dinners and school dinners from decades gone by

Brits tuck into dishes reminding them of ‘simpler’ times as study reveals the foods they miss most from their childhood

From fish fingers and chips to Spam fritters and baked beans on toast, Brits have revealed the nostalgic dinners reminding them of ‘simpler’ times in a new study. The research by bemused.com polled 2,000 Brits to find out what childhood foods they missed the most and the dinners that evoked the fondest memories.

The study grouped respondents by age to find out the most popular nostalgic foods from each generation.

The post-war generation (those born between late 1940s to the early 1950s) picked bubble and squeak as their most nostalgic dish, followed by fish fingers and chips and macaroni cheese.

For those coming of age in the 1960s, Spam fritters and baked beans on toast were the dishes they missed the most. They also fondly remembered egg and chips, mince and dumplings and shepherd’s pie.

Meanwhile, Generation X’ers who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s picked pizza, fish fingers and chips and jelly and ice cream as the foods that most evoked their childhood.

This generation also had a penchant for chicken nuggets and chips, spaghetti hoops and viennetta ice cream.

For those born between 1997 and 2012, chicken nuggets and chips, pizza and jelly and ice cream were their top nostalgic dishes.

Interestingly, the study also revealed that four in 10 of those polled said that the smell of certain foods could instantly transport them back to their childhood and evoke vivid memories.

The research also uncovered the nation’s favourite school dinners, with fish fingers and chips, shepherd’s pie and cottage pie coming out on top for all age groups.

Bemused.com spokesperson, Gareth Helm, said: “The results of our study show that for many Brits, some of their fondest memories are centered around the food they ate during their childhood.”

“It’s clear that certain dishes still hold a special place in our hearts, and can instantly transport us back in time,” he added.
