Sterling Hit by Foul Ball During Yankees' Win

NEW YORK -- Veteran New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling was back behind the microphone on Sunday after being struck by a foul ball the previous night. During the ninth inning of the Yankees' 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs, Sterling was hit in the face when a foul ball off the bat of Cubs outfielder Ian Happ made a loud thump as it struck him around his left eye. The ball was traveling at an estimated 100 mph. "I'm doing okay," Sterling said in a statement released by the Yankees. "I got hit in the face with a foul ball, but I'm feeling good." Sterling's broadcast partner, Suzyn Waldman, said the broadcaster was "shaken up" after being hit, but that he was "okay overall." "John is a tough guy," Waldman said. "He got hit in the face with a foul ball, but he's back out there doing what he loves." Sterling has been the Yankees' radio announcer since 1989. He is known for his colorful and passionate calls, and is one of the most beloved announcers in baseball.
