Ct Earthquake 2011

**10 Years Later: Remembering the 2011 Earthquake that Shook the East Coast** **April 5, 2024** - Ten years ago today, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck near Mineral, Virginia, sending shockwaves up and down the East Coast. The quake was felt as far north as Connecticut and as far south as Georgia, impacting millions of people. Residents along the coast reported feeling light shaking, described as similar to a passing truck. However, in some areas, such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New Jersey, the shaking was more intense, causing buildings to rattle and furniture to move. The earthquake, which occurred on August 23, 2011, at 1:51 p.m. local time, had an epicenter approximately 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia. It was the strongest earthquake to hit the region since 2003. Although the quake caused no major damage or injuries, it served as a reminder of the seismic activity that can occur in the eastern United States. Experts have noted that while large earthquakes are rare in this region, they can still happen and can cause significant shaking.
